We mostly associate air con with offices and hotels, but air con using heat pump technology to
both heat and cool, is an extremely efficient option. For A rated houses that get too hot, the up to 8
units of cooling put out for one unit of energy put in solves that problem and if you have solar
panels, will cost you nothing to run.

Heating efficiencies of up to 5 units of heat put out for every one unit put in, compared to water
heating which is 1 for 1, mean air to air heat pump home energy upgrades are becoming the go to
choice for many people. They do not cost as much as an air to water heat pump, but there is no
SEAI grant, which there should be ! Installing an air to air heat pump air con unit in say, an open
plan kitchen, living, dining room area and the main bedroom, is far less intrusive than an air to
water system, costs a lot less and you can easily turn up the heating or cooling, almost instantly.
